The Base: The Gregorian Calendar

Most of the world uses the Gregorian Calendar, introduced by Pope Gregory XIII in 1582. It was a reform of the Julian Calendar and corrected small errors in measuring the tropical year. Its main innovation was the leap year rule.

The Complexities of Date Calculation

• Leap Years: A year is a leap year (has 366 days) if it is divisible by 4, except for end-of-century years, which must be divisible by 400. For example, 2000 was a leap year, but 1900 was not. This makes simply multiplying days by year inaccurate.
